Wings & Wheels - Dunsfold
A Wings & Wheels event is to take place at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey on June 4th 2005.
The "Wings & Wheels" event is being hosted in partnership with Brooklands Museum. Although details of the event are now being finalised, they have provisionally been allocated the Red Arrows Display team, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Harrier GR7 display.
“Brooklands Wings & Wheels at Dunsfold” is timed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 70th anniversary of the first flight of the Hawker Hurricane fighter. It is being organised by Brooklands Museum Trust and Dunsfold Park Ltd, with all profits going to the Brooklands Museum Trust, CHASE and Cranleigh Village Hospital Trust.
Dunsfold Aerodrome was a base for Canadian and Dutch B-25 Mitchell bombers during WWII, and for aircraft involved in the Berlin Airlift in 1949. It was subsequently used by Hawker Aircraft and BAE Systems to build combat aircraft including the Hunter, the Harrier and the Hawk until the factory was closed in 2000. The action for the day will start with a fly-in of around 60 vintage and modern aircraft, followed by a series of demonstrations by Brooklands-style racing cars and motorcycles (including several giant aero-engined racers) and spectacular modern vehicles, and a three-hour air display featuring historic and modern aircraft. The air display is planned to include:
RAF Red Arrows display team
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Avro Lancaster, Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane)
The Royal Navy Historic Flight - Hawker Sea Fury and Hawker Sea Hawk
RAF Harrier GR7 display
RAF Hawk solo display
Hawker Hurricane
and other display participants to be announced
Included in aircraft flying in for the day are expected to be other examples of the Hawker Hurricane fighter (many of which were built at Brooklands and which were the most successful fighters of the Battle of Britain) and other rare and exotic machines.
