Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset will once again be holding it’s annual Air Day on Saturday 17th September. The day will pay tribute to the personnel and aircraft of the Royal Navy and the part they have played in shaping history during the past century. An extensive flying and static display is planned with military and civilian aircraft, historic and modern from around the world.
Today RNAS Yeovilton is at the heart of the Fleet Air Arm and is one of Europe’s busiest military airfields. It is home to the Royal Navy’s Sea Harriers, Commando Helicopter and Small Ships’ Flights (Lynx) Squadrons. Many of these aircraft saw recent action in the Gulf. The Royal Navy Historic Flight also resides at RNAS Yeovilton and their aircraft such as the Sea Fury and Sea Hawk will also be on show.
The 5 hour flying display will feature many Navy aircraft types depicting this year’s theme – Versatile Maritime Force. The roar of fast jets will be plenty especially from some of our international visitors as well as the RAF’s Tornadoes, Jaguars and Harriers. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a vintage fly-in will provide something a little bit quieter but just as impressive. The world famous RAF Red Arrows Display Team will once again be performing to the Yeovilton crowds. The finale to the show will be the traditional Commando Assault Demonstration, featuring over 25 aircraft, incorporating the RAF and Army.
The Fleet Air Arm Museum will be open free of charge to Air Day ticket holders. It houses the largest collection of Naval aircraft in Europe and it includes eight aircraft which cannot be seen anywhere else in the World. Visitors can go on-board Concorde or be transported by a simulated helicopter flight to the replica flightdeck of the aircraft carrier HMS ARK ROYAL. A combination of two enormous projection screens coupled with real aircraft form part of a spectacular simulated launch sequence. You’ll experience the thrills and sounds of a working flight deck, which makes this a truly unforgettable attraction!
There'll be plenty of entertainment on the ground, too, for all the family. A large display of static aircraft is planned with arena displays from the Royal Marines Band and HMS Heron’s Field Gun Crew. The day will also include side shows, funfair, vintage, classic and military vehicles, service demonstrations, picnic areas, helicopter pleasure flights, simulator rides, trade stands, West Country produce and craft exhibitions and much more.
