What shutter speed were you getting and are these ISO100?
My last trip to Slimbridge was on a nice sunny day and i was getting 1/1600th and 1/2000th second shutter speed with ISO100 and F/4 on a Canon 70-200mm lens. I find with birds in flight you really do need to get a very fast shutter speed to get a decent shot and it helps to have really good weather. or resort to bumping up the ISO speed.
If you want the GPS location and/or their web site I can let you have them. They also have a small camp site should you want to spend a day or two in the area. Maybe take in the fabulous Elan Valley dams.
